wreckers unite

Written on March 15, 2007

so i have been working on this site for a month or so now, changing things as i go. this whole idea will be a work in progress and i am inviting you to participate in the evolution of it. the project seemed to want to jump ahead of me before it was officially launched. i did a few interviews early in the year and mentioned the book, and several readers found the site via a google search, (and through the flickr site). before i knew it people were wrecking journals and posting them here! several blogs had posts about it. i was overwhelmed with email! it’s been so exciting to see it unfold. thank you to all who have responded thus far.

if you would like to know what this site is all about you might want to read the story first.

so here is what i would like from you:

  • read the instructions to get some ideas of what to do. feel free to interpret them any way you like. come up with your own methods. there are no rules.
  • join the flickr group and start posting your wrecked journal pages. (when you upload your pages to flickr they are automatically shown in the gallery here.) please invite anyone you think would be interested.
  • come up with your own instructions and submit them here. I haven’t posted all of the prompts in the book here, just to keep some surprises.
  • tell me what you would like to see on this site in the comments. i am planning to have occasional guest wreckers and challenges. would you be interested in a forum? any ideas will be considered.
  • if anyone is skilled at wiki creation, i have already started an independent wiki page on the subject of “creative destruction” and am looking for someone to help with the coding and organization. email me.
  • please send any articles, quotes or sites that you think are relevant to this site and I will post about them here.
  • the book will be officially released this june (2007) by Perigee (Penguin), and i am really excited to finally share with the world. if you would like to acquire an advance galley copy for review, please email me and i will be happy to send you one. (please note that this applies to publications, magazines, and websites who regularly do reviews, etc. I am not able to send it to individuals until it is officially released.)

if you haven’t yet tried wrecking a page in your journal just for the experience of it, i highly recommend it (or you can wait for the book and wreck that). beware, it can be quite addictive, and rather revolutionary (in a culture that always tells us to behave.) happy wrecking!

This is awesome. I’ve always been tempted to wreck my journal with the coffee sitting in the mug nearby but never actually did it. Maybe I’ll do it now. Can’t wait for the book to come out! I’m a big fan.

I want to make a pot of coffee just so that I can make coffee rings in my moleskine.

This book looks refreshingly tantalising. not boring standard ‘illustrations’ found in other artists books but thought provoking and original …… imagination! bravo :)

dang girl! this is totally cool — a mondo, awesomo idea, i can’t wait to get started — the simplicity of it is brilliant! if you get to the cape this summer i’d love to have an event at my shop…

      Brilliant!
I’ve also been wrecking my journals to use them in my art for some time now. I just added two pieces to the Flickr group.
You always inspire me Keri, thank you!

Keri, this is awesome. Thanks for giving folks like me the courage to let go of the idea that a journal has to be contained and pretty. I’ve a few journals I started and abandoned ‘cos they never seemed quite good enough that will be finding their way on to my desk to be worked in.

My art partner told me to go see your new project and I must say you’ve targeted something I’ve been trying to do for a while. I’m more a “it must look nice and pretty” type of person who’d like to go wild with art and creativity in general. Can’t do it on my own. Your book might help me get messy. Thanks for the light, I definitely need guidance…

      Wow! Love it!
Fits in well with my love of failure theory. Also recently bought 9 pads of partially used graph paper on ebay. They came with bent corners and all that.
Thanks for putting this idea together like this. Totally inspiring.

      Hi Keri!

I found your blog by accident and I have to say I’m really loving your Wreck This Journal project! I’m definitely starting my own journal soon! And it’s really great timing because I find myself stuck in a rut lately. Thank you for your starting the project! It’ll definitely help the creative juices flowing again!
